When the Cold War was raging after World War II, a local civil defense control center was created in the basement of Building 41 in Portage. Its function was to coordinate responses to air raids and bombing of targets in Kalamazoo County. This was announced in the Nov 1950 issue of Upjohn News and then a full article was published in the July 1952 issue.
