The Unicap Brand

Unicap, a multi-vitamin, was introduced in 1940 by The Upjohn Company. It quickly became a well-known brand across the U.S. and other countries. Other Unicap multi-vitamin formulations followed, such as Unicap Senior, Unicap Therapeutic and Unicap Chewable. All of them were made in Building 41 in Portage, Michigan. By 1990, most Unicaps had made the move from glass bottles to plastic ones. The Upjohn vitamin business was very robust right up until the end of the company in 1995. The bottles below are all in my collection.

There was also a multi-vitamin for pets, named Unipet. Unipet tablets had the dubious and unique distinction of being more expensive to assay the active ingredients and do other necessary testing than it cost to manufacture the tablets!

Here's a 1974 TV commercial for Unicap

In the 1980s I can remember going to the Upjohn Building 41 cafeteria and using one of these vitamin tablet dispensers to get a free daily Unicap M tablet. The M indicated a multi-vitamin also containing minerals. Every cafeteria and snack bar on the Portage and Kalamazoo sites had at least one of these dispensers.

Through the 1950s and 1960s. The Upjohn Company had an old-time pharmacy in Disneyland. Here's a link to the page on it. This was not a real pharmacy that filled prescriptions. However, it did give out free samples of Unicaps as shown below.

Finally, The Upjohn Company did sell many other vitamin products that were not branded as Unicaps. Here are a few of them in my collection. For a full list of them, look through the product listings.
